Morningstar Asia, the investment portal established in April 2000 as a joint venture between Morningstar Inc, based in Chicago, Hong Kong's Pacific Century CyberWorks and Softbank Finance Corporation of Japan, has launched a free Web-based investment information service which includes portfolio analysis and information on unit trusts and stocks.

Commenting on the development, Joe Mansueto, chairman and chief executive officer of Morningstar, said: 'We are bringing quality information to Hong Kong's marketplace where investors require in-depth information on mutual funds since the implementation of the Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) retirement system. This regulation offers investors savings programs similar to defined-contribution plans in the United States. Our site will be an excellent resource for investors, offering them investment education and information on unit trusts and stocks from the most-trusted source in the US for more than 15 years.'

Tao Huang, chief executive of Morningstar Asia, added: 'The launch of our Morningstar Asia Web site is the first step in our effort to bring quality investment education and information to a region that is experiencing significant change in financial regulation. We will provide the insight and essential information Hong Kong investors need to make informed unit-trust investment decisions.'
