According to reports in the Irish media, by the end of this year more than one-third of Irish taxpayers will be paying the top rate of 42%, far exceeding the government's long-term target that only one in five workers should pay the higher rate.
Official figures have revealed that at the end of 2002, slightly more than 30% of the Republic's income tax payers were paying highest rate of tax - up from 27% at the beginning of that year.
However, according to experts, Charlie McCreevy's failure to increase tax bands and credits in his December budget will mean that the number of top-rate taxpayers increases sharply in 2003.
