Monetary Affairs Commissioner Backs EU Corporate Tax Harmonisation Plans

by Ulrika Lomas, for LawAndTax-News.com, Brussels

06 July 2004

Speaking to the Belgian media at the weekend, EU Monetary Affairs Commissioner, Joaquin Almunia expressed measured support for France and Germany's corporate tax harmonisation plans, announcing that an Union-wide minimum company tax rate "could be a solution".

However, acknowledging that such a move is likely to meet with strong opposition from the lower taxing 'new' EU member states, and older members such as the United Kingdom and Ireland, he revealed that he would therefore be concentrating his efforts on the creation of an EU-wide harmonisation of assessment methods rather than tax rates.

Until recently, the European Commission has, at least publicly, been dismissive of the Franco-German plans, with Internal Market Commissioner, Frits Bolkestein announcing last week that:

"It is not the task of the European Commission to tell the governments what the level of corporate tax should be."
