Newly re-elected President of Botswana, Festus Mogae delivered his state of the nation address on Monday, painting an optimistic picture of the country's economic future in the short term, and pledging to address challenges faced by the business community and wider population, including unemployment, low productivity, poorly performing small businesses, poverty, and AIDS.
According to reports in the regional media, the address received a mixed response from the business community, representatives of which stressed the need for the government to follow through with the commitments made at the commencement of its second term.
President Mogae's Botswana Democratic Party won 44 of the 57 parliamentary seats late last month, thus securing its position as the governing party for another four years.
Among those who attended the President's inauguration ceremony were former president, Sir Ketumile Masire, dignitaries from various other African countries, members of the British House of Commons, and international diplomats.
