Nigerian Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Senator Adamu Aliero has announced recently that he plans to seek the imposition of a property tax in Nigeria’s wealthiest city Abuja.
"It is only Abuja, in the whole world that property owners don't pay tax. I want you to prepare to pay taxes on all your properties so that we can have money to provide basic amenities like water, roads, electricity, etc for you,” implored the minister.
Abuja, the capital of Nigeria, is located in the centre of Nigeria in the Federal Capital Territory, and is a planned city built in the 1980s.
Adamu, although supported by several non-governmental organisations, will have an uphill battle getting political approval, as the new tax will also apply to lawmakers, who are not known for their altruism.
