It emerged on Monday that Microsoft has settled a long-running patent dispute with digital rights management company, InterTrust Technologies.
As the software giant gears up for the release of its latest version of the Windows operating system, known as Longhorn, it appears to have been making a concerted effort to address legal concerns which could cast a shadow over the launch.
InterTrust, which holds patents covering methods of protecting data against unauthorised use even when transferred between computers or over the internet, had alleged that nearly all of Microsoft's products violated its rights.
The $440 million settlement agreement reached between the two companies will allow Microsoft a perpetual license to use InterTrust's patented technology.
