A major new maritime headquarters – the UK's biggest centre of marine expertise – is set to be constructed in Merseyside, it has been announced.
The Merseyside HQ will house the new Marine Maritime Organization (MMO), which was created as part of the government's revised Marine Bill, and will oversee all of the UK's maritime activities.
At present, Merseyside is home to around 1,000 maritime companies, which contribute around GBP2.5bn to the economy each year. It is estimated, however, that the introduction of the MMO will vastly increase this, adding a further 200 jobs to the 26,000 the sector currently provides.
