20 July 2007

Ireland's Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern this week announced that Merrill Lynch, one of the world's leading wealth management, capital markets and advisory companies, is to establish an EUR30 million new Research, Development & Innovation (RDI) Centre at its offices in Leopardstown in Dublin.

The project, supported by IDA Ireland, will be a centre of innovation focusing on the development of technological applications to support Merrill Lynch’s business worldwide. Up to 40 new, high-value, research-based jobs are expected to be created.

Speaking at the launch of the new venture, Mr Ahern announced that:

“It is a great pleasure to be here today to open this first Merrill Lynch Centre for Research, Development and Innovation in financial services. This investment of almost EUR30 million represents the largest investment of this type by any firm in Ireland. It reflects strongly the forward-looking culture of Merrill Lynch, as well as a clear commitment to its expanding operations here in Dublin.”

“I would like to acknowledge the work and commitment of IDA Ireland in making this Centre possible. It is our ability to continue to attract leading-edge global companies like Merrill Lynch and encourage the addition of core activities within our existing companies that will continue to place Ireland ahead of the competition,” he added.

Mr. Bob Wigley, Chairman of Merrill Lynch EMEA, went on to state that:

“The launch of the RDI Centre is important for Merrill Lynch both in Ireland and globally. Our aim is for the RDI Centre to be recognised as a source of innovation in the financial services and to attract the best talent from within Merrill Lynch’s global initiatives designed to drive forward its leading edge businesses.”

Commenting on the nature of the projects to be undertaken at the RDI Centre, Mike Ryan, Managing Director of Merrill Lynch Ireland, explained that:

“We will be creating innovative new approaches to how we do business as well as developing new constructs and processes across our global operations.”
