The UK's new merged Inland Revenue and Customs Department is set to launch on April 18, it emerged this week.
The Commissioners for Revenue and Customs Bill, which provides the legal basis for the new tax authority, received Royal Assent last week.
The chairman of the HMRC department, David Varney has also reportedly received his first annual remit from Chancellor Gordon Brown.
In the letter, sent on April 7, Mr Brown stated that:
"Revenue and Customs' aim, as set out in your Public Service Agreement, is to administer the tax and customs control systems fairly and efficiently and make it as easy as possible for individuals and businesses to understand and comply with their obligations and receive their tax credit and other entitlements."
