28 August 2008

Brazil's Foreign Minister, Celso Amorim, and Australia's Minister for Trade, Simon Crean (pictured), released a joint statement following their meeting in Canberra on Wednesday.

In addition to discussing a range of bilateral issues, the Ministers emphasised the importance of the WTO Doha Round for the global economy, and reaffirmed their commitment to pushing for the conclusion of the negotiating phase of the Round this year.

The Ministers then went on to add that they agreed that negotiations came very close to a conclusion in July, and that the small window of opportunity still existing should not be missed.

In addition, Ministers agreed to work together to this end, and instructed their officials to re-engage as soon as possible to discuss technical solutions.

Finally, Minister Crean and Minister Amorim also both agreed to generate the necessary political will and high level political engagement to conclude the Doha negotiations by engaging their respective colleagues on the issue.
