The Australian dental care system could be drastically reformed if a new proposal to increase funding via tax hikes gains approval.
An interim report from the country's National Health and Hospitals Reform Commission (NHHRC) has been put before the federal government, suggesting that the current system of privatized dentistry be scrapped in favour of a universal system.
The scheme would work by increasing the current Medicare levy paid by individuals, which is used to partially fund the country's health care sector.
According to the NHHRC, the increase in Medicare revenues could then be used to fund the set-up of 'Denticare', a universal dental service, free for all Australians.
If the proposal is adopted by the government, then taxpayers are likely to see their Medicare levies increase by around 0.75% to 2.25%.
