It emerged at the weekend that Ireland's former Finance Minister, Charlie McCreevy will take over the post of European Commissioner for the Internal Market later this year.
According to reports, Mr McCreevy will succeed Frits Bolkestein in November if his appointment is approved by the European Parliament.
Following the announcement in July that he would be leaving the Irish cabinet to become the Republic's representative in Europe, Mr McCreevy's praises were sung by the Irish business community, which lauded his low tax policies and fiscal prudence.
Despite previously stating that he had no interest in the role of European Commissioner, Mr McCreevy denied at the time that the announcement was initially made that he had been forced out of government, explaining that:
"It was only put to me last Tuesday when the Taoiseach and I had a meeting, he put this question to me and said he was going to wait for my decision. He put me under no pressure."
