The Minister for Information Technology and Telecoms in Mauritius has revealed that the jurisdiction is pushing ahead with ambitious new plans to become a regional e-commerce hub.
Geehad Geelchand, who is currently conducting a tour of India, England, France, and Ireland to promote Mauritius as as 'cyber island', spoke to the BBC's World Business Report last week, and outlined the advantages for international businesses and IT companies who choose to locate on the island.
He pointed to the jurisdiction's advantageous location four hours ahead of the United Kingdom and three hours ahead of the rest of Europe, multi-lingual population, and to the range of tax incentives on offer. However, most important according to Mr Geelchand, is the highly developed IT infrastructure available in Mauritius.
The IT Minister spoke of the existing network of optical fibre and satellite links, and revealed that from May, Mauritius will become the centre of a new submarine cable optic fibre connection which will link Portugal to Malaysia via the island. 'We shall be having 80 gigabits of capacity on our information super highway,' he told the BBC.
He also revealed that in addition to tax incentives, IT companies choosing to locate in the jurisdiction will also be able to take advantage of electricity at preferential rates, the opportunity to acquire property and land, and permanent resident status in the low-tax country.
Speaking in December, Mauritian Finance Minister, Sushil Kushiram announced that the Indian Government would be assisting in the e-development initiative, providing a credit line of $100 million to finance the development of the cyber city.
