The Bangladesh Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced the signing of a convention for the avoidance of double taxation and fiscal evasion with respect to taxes on income with Mauritius.
The convention was signed on December 21 in Mauritius.
During the course of her visit, Foreign Minister of Bangladesh, Dipu Moni held bilateral meetings with Mauritian Minister for Finance and Economic Development, Ramakrishna Sithanen.
The two ministers agreed upon exploring new areas of cooperation in the fields of tourism, commerce, trade and investment. They agreed upon the establishment of Joint Working Groups to facilitate this.
The two governments also resolved a dispute about Bangladeshi expatriate workers in Mauritius, which was the subject of controversy after the Mauritius government announced a decision to deport 12,000 Bangladeshi workers to protect local employment.
After long discussion, the Mauritian government agreed to retract its decision and allow Bangladeshi workers access to the Mauritian labour market. Both sides are soon expected to sign a Memorandum of Understanding on manpower.
