Mauritian Prime Minister Anerood Jugnauth has embarked upon an official trip this week to India with plans to promote business and IT links between the two countries.
The trip is Jugnauth's first bilateral visit since gaining power in September last year and it is not surprising that India is his immediate choice. Over half the Mauritian population is Indian in origin and Mauritius has - historically and traditionally - enjoyed close relations with India.
Jugnauth and his delegation arrived in Delhi on Monday. During his ten day trip he will travel to Bangalore to visit Bharat Electronics, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd., and leading software company Infosys. He will then tour Hitech city in Hyderabad which was created by the government for entrepreneurs. The agenda will also include meetings with leading business figures and industrial organisations such as the Confederation of Indian Industries and the Association Chambers of Commerce and Industries.
In the New Year, Jugnauth announced that Mauritius will become a free trade zone for the IT industry, and his visit to India is clearly integral to his recent pledge to encourage all initiatives towards developing the new economy.
A major proportion of Foreign Direct Investment is accessed by India via Mauritius and the two countries have a double taxation agreement that has been in force since the 1980s. But it is apparent that the Prime Minister is not only seeking to build upon the countries' already sound relationship - he is also intent on learning from India's experiences over recent years which has established the country as a significant global force in the business and IT industries.
