A new survey has found that a significant portion of the American public are in favour of rolling back some of this year's tax cuts in order to fund the mounting costs of military operations in Iraq.
According to the poll conducted by the Pew Research Center For People and the Press released earlier this week, 41% of those contacted by the organisation were in favour of postponing or reducing the 2003 tax cuts in order to meet the additional $87 billion President Bush has requested from Congress to help rebuild war-torn Iraq. Additionally, a further 16% of those polled were prepared to accept this outcome, whilst 38% were opposed to changing tax cuts.
Meanwhile, the survey found that 64% of Americans were against cuts in domestic spending and 55% were opposed to adding further to the government deficit.
Though the poll found that slightly less conservative leaning Americans favored rolling back tax cuts than Democrat supporters, the division in opinion along party lines did not appear to be greatly significant.
