Manx Government Announces Conclusion Of Brussels Trip,

A government delegation headed by Isle of Man Chief Minister Tony Brown has
announced its return after a three-day official visit to Brussels.
The trip was part of a continuing programme to develop relationships and mutual
understanding between the Isle of Man and key international audiences. The Chief
Minister was accompanied by Transport Minister David Anderson MHK, Chief Secretary
Mary Williams and Director of External Relations Della Fletcher.
The delegation gained insights into a range of European Union issues, including
transport and energy policies, during a series of meetings. These included a
briefing with the European Commission Ambassador to the US, former Irish Prime
Minister John Bruton, meetings with Scottish and United Kingdom government representatives
in Brussels; as well as with European Commission Director Generals in respect
of internal markets, energy and transport.
The Chief Minister explained:
“The Isle of Man is not a member of the European Union but its influence
is all around us. In a challenging global environment it is more important than
ever for the Island to engage with key international bodies so that we understand
them and they understand us.”
The Isle of Man has a special and limited relationship with the European Union,
under an agreement (Protocol 3) negotiated when the UK joined the then European
Economic Community in 1973, allowing free trade in agricultural and manufactured
products between the Isle of Man and EU members. Apart from matters relating
to this agreement, including Customs, the island is not bound by EU laws and
it pays nothing to, and receives nothing from, EU funds.
