The people of Malta consider themselves amongst the most knowledgeable about issues concerning the European Union compared to the other nine states about to cede to the EU in May 2004 the latest Eurobarometer survey has revealed.
Using a scale of one to ten, when asked how much they felt they knew about the EU, the Maltese population came out top of the survey with an average score of 5.33, above Slovenia which averaged 5.27, and Cyprus with a 5.10 average response.
However, the Maltese not only think they are knowledgeable about the EU, a test of nine statements concerning the European Union saw the islanders come out on top again, averaging 5.32 correct answers, above Poland with 5.05. Cyprus averaged 4.48.
The poll also found that most of the new members trusted the EU to supply information about membership issues more than their domestic governments, which included Malta. People in Cyprus, on the other hand, trusted the EU less than their own government to supply them with accurate information regarding EU matters.
