Maltese Unions Threaten Legal Action

by Robert Lee, for LawAndTax-News.com, London

06 January 2005

It emerged this week that eight unions in Malta, representing more than 3,000 workers in various sectors, are threatening to take legal action if they are not given representation on the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development (MCESD).

According to national media reports, the unions, comprising amongst others the Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses, the University of Malta Academic Staff Association, the Association of Airline Engineers, and the Union of Cabin Crew, joined forces last November in an attempt to persuade the Maltese authorities to allow them representation at MCESD level.

However, they merely received a letter of acknowledgement to their request for a meeting with Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi.

Speaking to reporters with regard to the next step in the unions' campaign to secure representation for their members on the Council, Rudolph Cini revealed that they are seeking legal advice, and announced that:

"We reserve the right to see what actions we might take."
