GWU steps-up anti-budgetary campaign
On Thursday the General Workers Union (GWU) issued new directives
to workers in different organizations during the second phase
of its anti-budget campaign Enough is Enough.
Workers at the harbours, and those at Enemalta (electricity provider), Maltacom (telecommunications company), Maltapost, the drydocks, the Water Services Corporation, the Freeport and AirMalta (Maltas national airline) have been ordered not to do any work directly related to government and parastatal corporations as from Friday. This means that GWU members who work in these organizations are not going to handle any government work or merchandise.
The union also ordered employees at Maltas main banks, BOV and HSBC, not to accept payments of water and electricity bills. Moreover, the union ordered Maltapost employees not to process letters or parcels sent to Government, Enemalta, Maltacom, Public Broadcasting Services (PBS), AirMalta, Malta Maritime Authority and Freeport. As from Friday letters sent to the Water Services Corporation are not going to be delivered to the corporation as part of the directives.
The GWU is stepping up its pressure on the government to review its budgetary measures taken last November.
