The Prime Minister of Malta, Mr Eddie Fenech-Adami, is to resign from office on Monday, March 22, according to a report in the local media.
MaltaMedia News has learned from cabinet sources that the Prime Minister has cancelled several meetings with the European Union in anticipation of a hand-over of power to his designated successor, Dr. Lawrence Gonzi.
It appears that Dr Fenech-Adami has decided to quit office following a controversial criminal trial concerning the murder of a National Party political activist, during which it was alleged that the Prime Minister had knowledge of the perpetrator of the crime.
The resignation of Dr Fenech-Adami will also mean the resignation en masse of the entire cabinet. Dr Gonzi will appoint his own team after being sworn into office next Monday.
