Maltese Prime Minister, Lawrence Gonzi and leader of the Labour Party, Alfred Sant have this week been discussing proposed reforms to the country's electoral system.
According to reports in the national media, the two men have discussed the implementation of a 7.5% national threshold of votes that a political party must secure in order to be represented in Parliament. This amounts to around 23,000 votes out of a 304,000 strong voting population.
Under the current regime, a 16.67% district threshold (or between 3,600 and 3,800 votes per district) is in place.
