Maltese Prime Minister, Dr Eddie Fenech Adami announced at the weekend that in the increasingly likely event that Malta accedes to the European Union in 2004, the government will continue to lobby to ensure that the jurisdiction receives more funds during its first three years of EU membership.
The European bloc has assured the current batch of pre-accession countries that no new member state will end up being a net contributor during its first few years as an EU member. However, speaking at a conference on Saturday, Dr Fenech Adami revealed that as things currently stand, discounting the structural funds, Malta will receive less than Lm3 million per year during its first three years of membership.
'This is a pittance,' the Maltese Sunday Times quoted the Prime Minister as observing. He told delegates to the conference that he has already raised the matter with EU President, Romano Prodi, and Commissioner for Enlargement, Guenther Verheugen, but will continue to lobby for more funds.
