Maltese Prime Minister, Eddie Fenech Adami has rejected a report carried by the Malta Independent last week which suggested that the jurisdiction could be left behind when the next round of accessions to the European Union take place.
The Maltese are deeply divided on the issue of EU membership, and even if the country's negotiating team manages to close the seven remaining chapters of the acquis communautaire before October, the government will still need to convince the populace to support accession to the European bloc in a referendum.
However, responding to the report, in which unnamed sources close to the negotiations suggested that Malta is in danger of missing out unless rapid progress is made in negotiations, Dr Fenech Adami announced on Sunday that last week's report was 'untrue and should be discarded.'
He added that: 'The truth is exactly the opposite,' but declined to give any more detail when questioned by the newspaper.
