Maltese Nationalist MP, Michael Bonnici, has urged the government to offset the tax between an individual's tax arrears and any sum that the Inland Revenue may owe that person.
Mr Bonnici said that although the government had to collect taxes, it should treat taxpayers with large arrear taxes with some sensitivity. He further pointed out that interest is currently levied on the arrears but by the same token the government does not add interest onto any monies that it owes to taxpayers.
The MP suggested that the next budget could include a provision to offset the tax, even if it only covered a portion of the sum due.
