One of Malta's main Internet Service Providers (ISPs) recently launched the very first free Internet service in the jurisdiction. Waldonet Ltd says the service became free as of 31 January 2001.

Managing Director of Waldonet, Aldo Calleja, explained that users will be given a free email account with unlimited access to their email and will also have 2 hours of browsing time (between 3am and 6pm) free every month. Users who wish to browse for longer times may purchase additional hours online.

Waldonet, which has representative offices in Zurich, Warsaw and London, has already introduced to Malta a number of other services and concepts. For instance, in 1996 it was the first ISP to introduce time-based access allowing users to purchase only what they really needed to use. It also gave Quality of Service guarantees to companies requiring bandwidth guarantees, and because it is a fully digital ISP, it can offer security features to its users ensuring that third parties do not abusively use their Internet account.

Mr Calleja explained that Internet use in Malta was seeing a substantial increase. Waldonet is only one of a number of ISPs providing e-commerce solutions for several Maltese e-businesses. Mr Calleja said local customers that have made use of Waldonet’s e-business solutions have generated Lm1m worth of new business over the past year.
