1,147 persons can hold two citizenships
Up till the 31st October 2000, 1,147 persons had been informed that they could keep two citizenships, a Maltese and a foreign one that they already had or which they had acquired while living abroad. During the same period, 400 persons were registered or naturalised as Maltese citizens, and due to the changes in the citizenship law, they do not have to give up their foreign citizenship.
As such, they can also have two citizenships. Details about these cases may be found in the Government Gazette, as stated by the same Citizenship Law. Home Affairs Minister Tonio Borg provided this information in a reply to a Parliamentary question by Honorable Gavin Gulia.
