Maltese Firm Loses Copyright Claim Against HSBC

According to a report from the Times of Malta this week, Maltese firm, IP Limited has lost its copyright infringement bid against HSBC over software allowing the online payment of mobile phone bills.

Ruling in the First Hall of the Civil Court, Mr Justice Joseph Micallef denied the firm's request for a warrant of prohibitory injunction against the bank.

The judge argued that IP Limited had failed to prove that it held exclusive rights to the software in question, and that it was therefore not entitled to request the issuing of the warrant.

However, because the court had previously provisionally upheld the request, the launch of the new service by HSBC has been delayed.
