Addressing a meeting of Maltese singers, composers, and authors last week, Parliamentary Secretary, Edwin Vassallo announced that the jurisdiction's copyright laws will be amended this year to bring them into line with European Union rules, in particular the Information Society Directive, which will make the bypassing of technology aimed at preventing unauthorised copying illegal.
According to the Malta Independent, which reported on the meeting held at St James Cavalier on Thursday, Mr Vassallo praised the assembled creative professionals' contribution to the country's cultural and economic development, and condemned the use of modern technology to deprive them of the fruits of their creativity.
He also revealed that the Maltese authorities will be issuing new regulations on collecting societies - which collect rights on behalf of authors - in order to make them more accountable.
