Maltese Chamber Of Commerce Urges Public Sector Reforms

by Robert Lee, Tax-News.com, London

13 October 2003

The Maltese Chamber of Commerce has issued a sharp rebuke to the country's public sector, announcing that it is time to clamp down on abuses in the public finances at the expense of honest tax payers who pay their dues.

According to a report in Di-ve news, the chamber argued that the government should not shy away from considering bold reform in the provision of public services and subsidies, and questioned current policies such as free medicines and educational grants.

The report explained that the Chamber is participating in discussions concerning the up-coming budget within the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development, and will in due course submit formal proposals following these discussions.

It is expected that these recommendations will call for the boosting of economic activity by encouraging entrepreneurship and measures to ensure fiscal equity across the broad spectrum of taxpayers. The Chamber is also urging the government to address the fiscal deficit by reforms to the public sector pay system, which it claims is open to abuse by workers in the sector.
