The Chamber of Commerce criticised the lack of consultation on the introduction of the new tax on air tickets from travel agents, saying it will create unfair competition from airlines.
In a statement, the Chamber of Commerce said it was surprised by the contents of two recently published legal notices that enforced the new tax on air tickets sold by travel agents, but left untouched the same tickets sold by airlines.
The statement said that it seems like the measure was based upon counsel by people who feel more knowledgeable that the people in the business. Although the measure was implemented in accordance with EU laws, exemptions given to EU countries were totally ignored in Malta, and all this when Malta is not yet an EU member.
