Mixed reactions to telecoms liberalisation bill
The three leading operators in the telecommunications sector, Maltacom, Vodafone, and Melita Cable have reacted differently to the draft bill for the liberalisation of the telecommunications market published on Friday.
Maltacom has welcomed the draft bill and its chairman Maurice Zarb Adami said that the plan has authorised Maltacom to enter new areas of the telecommunications sector. Vodafone and Melita Cable, on the other hand, would not comment about the draft bill.
Opposition Leader Dr Alfred Sant said the government was solely interested in pleasing the clique and he added that ultimately the bill had neglected Maltacoms workers. Communications Minister Censu Galea, on the other hand, said that government had made reference in the national plan to safeguard the future of Maltacom employees.
The draft bill for telecoms liberalisation includes a timetable for the liberalisation of telecommunication services. All services except fixed telephony, mobile telephony, international gateway and cable television, will be liberalised as from 1 June 2000.
