Regulations for the remote gaming industry are expected to be published by Malta’s Lotteries and Gaming Authority in the near future, allowing the jurisdiction to host e-gaming operators, the Times of Malta reported earlier this week.
Malta already has regulations on internet betting and some Maltese companies do offer such services from the island, but this is the first time that Malta is to host e-gaming operators.
Sources informed the daily that the regulations have been drawn up following consultation with the industry, and the first licenses are anticipated shortly after their publication.
An applicant for an e-gaming license must be a limited liability company registered in Malta and with a physical presence in the jurisdiction, and prospective licensees will be expected to pass a ‘fit and proper’ persons test, in addition to satisfying a number of other regulations preventing fraud and money laundering.
However, the paper also reported that one of the conditions of the new licences may exclude Maltese residents from taking part in e-gaming.
