Malta and the United Arab Emirates recently put pen to paper on a treaty aimed at preventing double taxation. The agreement also establishes a Maltese consulate in Dubai in addition to strengthening trade ties between the two parties.
The agreement should consolidate further Malta's influence in the region in the wake of the opening of a trade centre in Dubai last April.
The proceedings followed a seminar on business links between Malta and the UAE held at the Dubai Chamber which was attended by the Maltese ambassador and various officials. Representatives from the Emirates business community were also present as well as a delegation from Malta there to foster better trade links with the region.
The Director General of the Dubai Chamber of Commerce, Abdul Rahman Ghanim Al Mutaiwee, higlighted at the seminar that trade between Malta and the UAE has risen from $10 million in 1997 to $22 million in 2001. He also invited the Maltese to establish a distribution hub in Dubai so that Malta can easily sell its products in the wider Gulf region.
