It emerged this week that Malta has become the twelfth EU member state to ratify the EU constitution, whilst Poland has put the decision on hold until September at the earliest.
Speaking following the unanimous parliamentary vote on Wednesday, Maltese Prime Minister, Lawrence Gonzi announced that:
"It is a historic day for Malta. Through its vote, Parliament is closing a long, controversial, divisive chapter in its history and opening another where there is national support on European policy."
Meanwhile, Poland joined the Czech Republic, Denmark, Ireland, Portugal and the UK in putting the ratification process on hold following the French and Dutch no votes.
The issue is now unlikely to be put on the agenda until after the general election in September, by which time observers have predicted that the make-up of Parliament may be more euro-sceptical.
