The Malta Independent reported this week that the schedule for the dismantling of import levies on certain foodstuffs was published on Tuesday.
Basic food items (not linked to local agricultural production, and therefore not covered by the Special Market Policy Programme for Maltese agriculture), such as flour, cooking oil, margarine, mayonnaise, salad cream, pasta, biscuits, ice cream, and beer will benefit from a phased 30% reduction in import levies starting September this year.
The remaining 70% of the current levy will be removed completely when Malta accedes to the European Union, which is set to happen in January 2004.
