Maltese Prime Minister Dr Lawrence Gonzi attempted to placate island business and employee representatives on Monday by postponing the introduction of a proposed environmental levy, the eco tax.
Addressing the Malta Council for Social and Economic Development, Dr Gonzi explained that the tax would not be implemented on August 1 as originally planned, as the government now wishes to extend the consultation period.
The move comes in response to widespread anger from the social partners represented on the Council, who have complained that there has been a lack of consultation over the proposals. The government has yet to fix a new date for the introduction of the tax.
The Maltese government recently surprised industry and producers with the publication of the eleven page draft of the Eco-Contribution Bill, which proposed a variety of tax rates on a range of goods that have the potential to pollute the environment.
