The Maltese Consulate in Dubai was officially opened last week, marking another milestone in the developing relationship between the island and the Middle Eastern jurisdiction, with the emphasis very much on bilateral trade.
According to Saviour Gauci, the Maltese Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, the consulate has been planned for a number of years, and complements the Malta Trade Centre in Dubai which has been up and running for the past year.
The Dubai Chamber of Commerce recently reported that trade between the two nations has increased significantly in recent years having risen from $10 million in 1997 to $22 million in 2001. Malta and the United Arab Emirates have also signed a double taxation treaty in a bid to boost bilateral investment.
