Malta, Jordan Sign Double Tax Avoidance Accord

Jordanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Naser Jodeh and Finance Minister Bassem Salem received Maltese Finance Minister Tonio Borg on an official visit to Jordan this week. The two countries signed their first bilateral agreement on the avoidance of double taxation and fiscal evasion with respect to income taxes.

When the convention for the avoidance of double taxation enters into force, upon the exchange of formal notes, it will remove double taxation on investments, promote increased trade and provide a beneficial legal framework between businesses in the respective countries. The agreement is the first between the two countries since diplomatic relations were established in June of 1974. During the meeting the ministers also agreed to set up a business council to further strengthen commercial ties.

The meeting with Jordanian officials marked the end of Borg’s official visit to the Middle East. Within the scope of the trip, agreements were also concluded with Syria and Lebanon. In Syria, Borg signed an agreement of political cooperation between the two countries and in Lebanon, an agreement on political cooperation and a protocol amending the current double tax treaty were initialled.
