Maltese Foreign Minister Michael Frendo confirmed this week that negotiations on a double taxation treaty with the United States are ongoing.
In reply to a question tabled by Leo Brincat in parliament, Frendo confirmed that the matter was first raised during a meeting between then Foreign minister John Dalli and US Secretary of State Colin Powell.
The issue was then revisited at a meeting at Malta's embassy in Washington between Maltese ambassador John Lowell and Glyn T. Davies, deputy assistant secretary for European Affairs at the State Department on August 19, 2004, and followed up by a further meeting on September 13 between the ambassador and Kathleen Allegrone, director for European and Regional Affairs at the State Department.
Frendo revealed that he also discussed the subject with former senator Mirch Bayh on October 6.
