The Association of the Computer and Multimedia Industry in Malaysia (Pikom) has said that it expects the government to introduce tax incentives for the IT industry in next year's budget which could include a request from Pikom to introduce tax breaks on the cost of personal computers as well as computers bought by SMEs.
Speaking after the Pre-Award Presentation ceremony of the Malaysian ICT Awards in Seri Kembangan this week, Pikom chairman Looi Kien Leong said the tax breaks would enable the IT industry to keep its head above water if there is a global economic recession in the wake of the September 11 terroritst attacks on America. However, he did say that if there is a war, 'there would be opportunities for Malaysian companies to tap on the demand for defence technologies and related areas.'
