The European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee has urged Cypriots to support the final settlement plan for the reunification of Cyprus when they go to the polls this weekend.
In a resolution adopted last Wednesday, MEPs backed the view of Enlargement Commissioner, Guenther Verheugen, who has stated that if the so-called 'Annan plan' is not accepted by residents of the divided country, no alternative will be forthcoming in the near future.
Whilst acknowledging the complexity and delicacy of the situation, the MEPs stressed that the plan, if accepted, would constitute an historic compromise which could serve as an example for the resolution of other difficult international disputes.
They also sought to reassure the Cypriot population that measures and arrangements in the plan could be changed by mutual agreement, even after it is put in place.
