Speaking at a Chamber of Commerce lunch during a 2-day visit to the Isle of Man last week, the Lord Mayor of the City of London pledged to support the Isle of Man in Brussels.
'I am very well aware of the contribution the Isle of Man makes to the City of London. And it is very important that centres such as the Isle of Man - well regulated, with trust and with probity - continue. And we will strongly speak in that defence as well,' said Michael Oliver.
The Mayor said that the City was leading the drive to create a level playing field in Europe. In the arena of financial services there was a long way to go, said Mr Oliver, adding that he believed London would remain Europe's leading financial centre: 'There is no competition for the title of financial capital of Europe. Neither Paris nor Frankfurt has the ability to catch up with the many advantages that London enjoys.'
