Lord Chief Justice Questions UK Legal Reform Plans

by Robin Pilgrim, LawAndTax-News.com, London

04 August 2003

UK Lord Chief Justice, Lord Woolf announced on Thursday that he will be keeping a weather eye on the government's planned reforms to the country's legal system, and hinted that he may delay his retirement in order to help ensure that judges remain free from political interference.

Questioning the notion of creating a judicial appointments committee and a Supreme Court, Lord Woolf told reporters that:

'Arrangements must be put in place to protect the independence of the judiciary. If the executive can influence who is on the appointments committee and who it can choose, then that is interfering with the independence of the judiciary.'

However, he went on to add that the government should be permitted to retain a veto on judicial appointments.

As the UK's most senior judge, he will be presenting the judiciary's response to the Department of Constitutional Affairs consultation proposals in October.
