London Conference On Offshore E-Commerce

Jason Gorringe, Tax-news.com, London.

11 May 2000

In just one year, offshore e-commerce in Europe has moved from an intriguing idea to a practical reality in a wide range of sectors, including betting and gaming, financial services, publishing, professional services, travel and music.

In some cases, firms have sprung up in offshore jurisdictions as new start-ups without any previous history; in other cases, established companies have relocated themselves partly or wholly offshore. Offshore jurisdictions are vying with each other to attract e-commerce businesses, some of the more prominent and successful jurisdictions being Bermuda, Jersey, the Isle of Man and Gibraltar.

The main, but not the only driving force leading companies towards an offshore existence is of course taxation. Major benefits can be gained both in terms of lower corporate taxation, and also in terms of sales taxes and VAT. There are difficulties however in transferring established trading operations from a high-tax to a low-tax area, including possible capital gains tax charges. Listed companies face additional problems, and may be reluctant to lose guaranteed access to capital markets - although there are a number of offshore stock exchanges, with more being planned.

A conference in London in June will address these and many other issues needing to be taken into account by a company considering an offshore location or relocation.

Offshore E-Commerce: Best E-Tax strategies for international companies will take place at The Hatton, London on 21st June 2000.
