Citing recently released government figures, the Liechtensteiner Vaterland reported on Tuesday that economic growth for the principality in 1999 came to 11.3%, with gross national product (GNP) reaching SFr 4,002 million.
However, the newspaper reported that although GNP represents the value created by the production of goods and the rendering of services within the jurisdiction, there are a relatively large number of foreign commuters employed in Liechtenstein - 38.5% of the workforce by the end of 1999.
Therefore, the government figures can give no concrete information about the income situation of the principality's resident population in the period under examination.
