Legal Row Over Access to UK Races For Russian Punters Heats Up

Prominent businessman, George Walker has begun a legal battle with the UK's Racecourse Association (RCA) over the right to provide exclusive access to events taking place on Britain's 59 racecourses to Russian clients.

According to a Telegraph report, Mr Walker currently provides live coverage of UK racing to some 150 outlets throughout Russia and the former Soviet Union, and his company, Premier Telesports renewed an eight year contract with the RCA for exclusive rights in 1999.

However, following breaches in the exclusivity deal, Mr Walker sought to renegotiate his contract with the racing body.

'Under the terms of the contract, I had the right to renegotiate payments if the contract was broken,' he explained to the newspaper, continuing:

'Litigation has been my last resort. I have tried over the last 18 months to negotiate an agreement with the RCA and Attheraces (the rival provider now favoured by the RCA) which not only secured the breaches which Premier Telesports were suffering but I hoped would permit all concerned to continue to operate without breaching Premier's rights.'

The RCA has claimed that Mr Walker, founder of the collapsed Brent Walker leisure empire, owes more than $450,000 in overdue payments.
