A poll of more than 100 senior partners with UK law firms has found that appetite within the legal community for further political integration within the EU is limited, although additional economic harmonisation would be welcomed.
According to the Legal Week news service, which conducted the survey in conjunction with EJ Legal, 66% of the lawyers questioned revealed that they would vote 'no' were the UK to hold a referendum on the EU constitution, with just 34% stating that they would support the proposed constitution.
43% of those polled thought that political integration within the European Union has gone far enough, with 30% arguing that it should be scaled back.
However, just over half (51%) of respondents suggested that there should be more economic harmonisation between EU member states.
Speaking to Legal Week, EU and competition chief with Ashurst, Nigel Parr explained that:
"I am in favour of further economic integration aimed at greater harmonisation of goods and services but opposed to further tax harmonisation."
