It emerged earlier this month that the Law Society has officially agreed to a separation of its regulatory and representative operations from 2008.
According to reports, a large majority of the Law Society council voted recently for the adoption of the 'Model 4' structure, which stops short of a complete splitting of the industry body.
Under the proposed model, put forward in an attempt to prevent more drastic reforms from being imposed by the government following the Clementi review, the regulatory and representative functions would be performed by two separate bodies.
However, these would be linked by an umbrella body, which would take responsibility for common operations and assets.
The move is being viewed by some as an interim measure, subject to change over the longer term.
