According to reports in the UK media this week, Law Society chief executive Janet Paraskeva has angered members of the industry body's council with a letter warning them not to attempt to interfere in individual regulatory decisions made by the Society.
Following press reports which suggested that the Society had launched an investigation into the dual role played by Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in Philip Green's attempted takeover of Marks & Spencer at the instigation of council members, Ms Paraskeva wrote:
"It will be obvious to you that it would be improper for a regulator's activities to be affected by individual representations of this sort. And it could be extremely damaging for the society's reputation for it to appear that [it] is susceptible to pressure of that sort in relation to its regulatory role."
Speaking to the Legal Week news service, one unnamed council member described the letter as "really impertinent".
